Rotating Halos and the Microlensing MACHO Mass Estimate

چکیده

We investigate the implications of a bulk rotational component of the halo velocity distribution for MACHO mass estimates. We find that for a rotating halo to yield a MACHO mass estimate significantly below that of the standard spherical case, its microlensing must be highly concentrated close to the Sun. We examine two classes of models fitting this criteria: a highly flattened 1/r halo, and a spheroid-like population with whose density falls off as 1/r. The highly flattened 1/r models can decrease the implied average MACHO mass only marginally and the spheroid models not at all. Generally, rotational models cannot bring the MACHO mass implied by the current microlensing data down to the substellar range.

POINT-AGAPE Pixel Lensing Survey of M31 : Evidence for a MACHO contribution to Galactic Halos

The POINT-AGAPE collaboration is carrying out a search for gravitational microlensing toward M31 to reveal galactic dark matter in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) in the halos of the Milky Way and M31. A high-threshold analysis of 3 years of data yields 6 bright, short–duration microlensing events, which are confronted to a simulation of the observations and the ...

Probing the Mass Fraction of MACHOs in Extragalactic Halos

Current microlensing searches calibrate the mass fraction of the Milky Way halo which is in the form of Massive Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs). We show that surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) can probe the same quantity in halos of distant galaxies. Microlensing of background quasars by MACHOs in intervening galaxies would distort the equivalent width distribution of the quasar emi...

Microlensing and halo cold dark matter.

We discuss the implications of the more than 50 microlensing events seen by the EROS, MACHO, and OGLE collaborations for the composition of the halo of our galaxy. The event rates indicate that the halo mass fraction in MACHO’s is less than 30%, consistent with expectations for a universe whose primary component is cold dark matter. We caution that the uncertainties are such that a larger MACHO...

Microlensing towards LMC : a study of the LMC halo contribution

We carry on a new analysis of the sample of MACHO microlensing candidates towards the LMC. Our main purpose is to determine the lens population to which the events may belong. We give particular emphasis to the possibility of characterizing the Milky Way dark matter halo population with respect to the LMC one. Indeed, we show that only a fraction of the events have characteristics that match th...
